"Tomorrow I May Be Far Away" by Romare Bearden, llllage of various papers with charcoal and graphite on canvas. Bearden made collages an acceptable form of art and was a leader of the Harlem Renaissance. There is a strong use of pale, cool colors on this painting. The man is the main focal point and is almost symmetrical but is placed on the vertical axis.

"The Assumption of the Virgin" by Nicolas Poussin, 1626, oil on canvas. This painting is a good representation of the use of directional and diagonal lines. The focal point is the virgin and the angels carrying her up into the sky, along with the clouds exaggerating the ascend into the sky.

I am a terrible artist so please bare with me.

Who Am I? I am painted by a French artist. I am from the impressionism period. I am painted at the last year of the seventeenth century. I am given a theme of art and nature. I am painted using oil paints on a canvas. I am 81.28 X 101.6 centimeters big. I am a Japanese landscape of a reflecting pond. My reflection is very important. Overtop of my pond, is a big gray-blue arch bridge that stretches throughout the painting. My bridge is symmetrical. My bridge has four beams and two rails. The beams and rails correspond in the back. I am a painted to look realistic. I am given a lot of shades right under my bridge. Behind my bridge, the pond water has a vanishing point and the monochromatic green grass begins.The grass is the ground of the painting. The grass is in small bunches and also covers both ends of the bridge. There are some small dandelions growing within the grasses at the right end of the bridge. My pond is in front of the painting and is also underneath the bridge. Freely floating on my pond in a smooth and wavy direction, there are a lot of tint green lily pads with pink and yellow flowers on every other lily pad. I am given equal emphasis to the details and landscape. I am very appealing. I caught Lisa’s eyes right away! Who am I?

"Hotel de la Marine" by Charles Marville, 1872-1876, albumen print. This photograph is a good example of symmetry. The lamp post is placed right on the vertical axis of the picture. If you were to fold the picture in half the lamp post would be a perfect reflection to its sides.

"Classic Landscape" by Charles Sheeler, 1931, oil on canvas. This painting truly incorporates the use of lines. There are examples of diagnol lines with the railroad. The clouds are an example of contour lines and the mounds of rocks are of directional lines.

Ekphrases

This painting focuses on a mother and a daughter in a room. The doorway to

the inside of the room is centered along the vertical axis of the painting. The

medium is oil on canvas and was created in 1658/1660. It was painted by a

Dutch artist. There are uses of primary and secondary colors. Such as a red

tablecloth on a brown table with dark color vase sitting on top. The chairs are

dark brown with yellow diamonds. The walls are gray and tan. The mother is

wearing a red shirt with a dark color skirt and a white bonnet. The young girl is

wearing a dress that is brown at the top and yellow at the bottom. The floor is a

reddish-orange brick color in a square formation. The young girl is standing in

the doorway holding the door handle and is glancing at her mother(I assume)

while smiling. The mother is folding a greenish-yellow cloth and smiling back

at her daughter. Above the doorway there is a small painting, with a brown

frame and the picture is blurred. If you look through the doorway you can see

another door leading outside and a window to the left of that outside door.

That door has two parts(top and bottom opens separately)and is open allowing

sunshine into the house along with the light coming through the windows. The

balance of this painting is asymmetrical; the left side is fuller than the right.

The mother is standing on the left side and little girl is slightly to the right of

the vertical axis. The sides are brought together by the light shining in from the

right and through the doorway. The theme of the painting is of human

experience and is representational; descriptive of a work of art that depicts

forms in the natural world.


The artist's style is from the Dutch genre; French meaning scenes showing

people at work, play, or rest. He popularized the style of painting. Some would

also describe his style as cinematic people.

Activity Eleven: Period or Movement

The painting "Fog off Mount Desert" by Frederic Edwin Church in 1850. This painting was created during the time of Realism which came about in the 19th century. This movement rose as an reaction to Neoclassicism and Romanticism(Mark Getlein). According to Mark Getlein, realist artist sought to depict the everyday and the ordinary. Some of the French placed alot of emphasis on nature as does this artist here. Church's painting is an actual depiction of Mount Desert in Maine.

In my next painting, "La Condition Humaine" by Rene Magritte was created in 1933. The time frame of this painting is of Surrealism. Surrealism derived from the Dada movement. Surrealist appreciate the logic of dreams, and the mystery of the unconcious. According to Jeff Metlein. The drawings flowed straight from the subconcious, unchecked by reason. This painting represents the outside versus inside.
